Home Remedies - Baking Soda!

Baking soda is amazing! This is another staple in everyone's kitchen that you might think it is only for refrigerator odor control (reacts with acids as the odor hits the baking soda, it is neutralized and turned permanently into salt) or for baking (where it reacts with the other components to release carbon dioxide that helps the dough to rise). I have always wondered how baking soda worked!

Baking soda is a component of the mineral natrol and was used by the Egyptians as a cleansing agent like soap. The baking soda that we know and love today was first produced in 1791 by a French chemist. As a home remedy it is used as an antacid to treat acid indigestion and heartburn, is anti-inflammatory in skin conditions, is good made into a paste for bee stings, is natural bleach for teeth, reduces bad breath, is alkaline and neutralizes acid, is good for diaper rash by making a paste with water and applying.

Baking soda is also an important ingredient in green cleaning around the house. Did you know that baking soda is more effective than vinegar, salt or hot water alone in removing pesticides from veggies if you aren't buying organic produce? Also, if you have musty books in your house, baking soda will absorb the musty smell.
