If only I could be
Superwoman then everything would be o.k. - and other myths
I remember a time in my life when my
vision for the future was not in alignment with my present
circumstances. Although
I desired perfection in just about every arena (and was
willing to work for it), my life
was anything but perfect.
I was feeling panicked, overworked, unappreciated,
exhausted and quite like the man in the circus tent spinning
the plates. Only my plates weren’t spinning very well any
more, they were all starting to wobble and crash to the
floor.
I remember driving to an HSN appearance
and worrying about my kids and family and current creative
projects and book deadlines and thinking…” If only I
could be
Superwoman then everything and everyone would be
o.k.” I was totally serious!
How would it be to create the perfect life with a
twitch and a wink and a Mary Poppins snap of the fingers.
I tried a few of those tricks once or twice as a
child and had high hopes (hey they worked on TV) yet magic
never seemed to come into my life by snapping my fingers or
twitching my nose.
Magic came to my life by believing in myself,
listening to my inner voice and stepping out in faith in the
direction of my dreams.
Back then I realized that I was acting
and feeling like a doormat, giving all my power away rather
than embracing it. I felt personally responsible for the
happiness or unhappiness of everyone in my life. While the
ultimate truth is that “Happiness is an inside job.
I realize the seriousness of helplessly wishing for
superpowers and the questions that it brought up for me
about not feeling like I was “enough” and what that meant
and what I needed to do about it.
Funny how we think that if we run faster,
fly higher or spread ourselves more thinly we will catch up.
But really the opposite is true.
We need to slow down, be more present and more
grounded. Connecting with inspiring friends is better than
having Superwoman’s bulletproof wristbands any day.
Supporting each other through crafting together, mastermind
groups and just plain connecting without comparing or
competing -- like we do here at Inspired At Home --
is more powerful than any imaginary superpowers could be.
We don’t need super powers. We just need
to empower ourselves with the knowledge that
who we are is
enough, what we have to give is enough, we just need to
remind ourselves to give it with all of our hearts.
